Courthouse Creamery

It's October 1959
The old schoolhouse bell just chimed
Three o'clock Friday and the rain is pouring down
I got my yellow raincoat galoshes and hat
Lassie lunch pail and more than that
I got pennies in my pocket
And I'm gonna spread them all around

So I dash down to the green arched hallway
Out to the street it's time to play
Splashin' in the puddles and singin' a happy song
Skipping down B Street past the candy jar
31 flavors there you are
Rafael Movie House I'll see you at the matinee

Well just down the block is my Grams little spot
Mary's Alteration Shop
Her sign hangs next to the barbershop's
Swirling red pole
She sits behind her loved sewing machine
Needle and thread creating fabric dreams
She can sew mend darn
She can fix almost anything

I open the door she looks up at me
Her eyes light up "hey Richie"
The ringin' from the bell on the door
Begins to fade away
She kisses and hugs me says how are you
Is there anything special that you'd like to do today
It's Friday afternoon Gram
Let's close the shop early today....

Walkin' together down Fourth Street
To the Courthouse Creamery
Talkin' and laughin' together
You always listen to me
Het let's sit at the shiny green counter
Drop a nickle for a song or two
Together with our ice cream sodas
Can't think of nothin' I'd rather do...
Than be with you....

Back at the shop she teaches me how to sew
I make a blue cat with green eyes that glow
She's got me figured out and she wouldn't
Want to change a thing
She knows that I'm different from all the rest
A little fairy boy that she loves the best
In her eyes I'm a star when I'm with her
I'm just who I am...

Walkin' together down Fourth Street
To the Courthouse Creamery
Talkin' and laughin' together
You always listen to me
Hey let's sit at the shiny green counter
Drop a nickle for a song or two
Together with our ice cream sodas
Can't think of nothin' I'd rather do...
Than be with you....

It's autumn and the trees are all ablaze
Red yellow gold in the afternoon haze
We're lickin' up leaves as we're makin'
Our way back home
Sunday night TV is the best to see
Lawrence Welk for Gram Walt Disney for me
I love to watch Tinkerbell fly
Across the midnight sky
Wooh fly .........

Walkin' together down Fourth Street
To the Courthouse Creamery
Talkin' and laughin' together
You always listen to me
Het let's sit at the shiny green counter
Drop a nickle for a song or two
Together with our ice cream sodas
Can't think of nothin' I'd rather do...
Than be with you....

Ridin' together in your 54 Chevy
Through the streets of San Rafael
Talkin' and laughin' together
You make life seem so swell
Hey did you see that giant orange pumpkin
In front of Charlies' Market yesterday
We can get one Gram we'll carve a Jack-O-Lantern
Scare everyone away....

Hey let's sit at the shiny green counter
Drop a nickle for a song or two....
Just a song or two....
I love being with you....
Just a song or two.......
